YouTube announced Friday that it will relaunch former President Donald Trump’s channel after more than two years of hiatus following the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol.
The move follows similar actions in recent months by Twitter and Facebook’s parent company Meta, though Trump has yet to resume posting to those platforms. That also comes after Trump announced last fall that he would run for president again in 2024.
“We carefully assessed the continued risk of real-world violence while balancing voters’ equal opportunity to hear from key national candidates heading into the election,” YouTube said. . Tweet Friday.
A representative for Trump did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment. Channel recovery was first reported by Axios.
YouTube initially suspended Trump’s channel after the Capitol riots, saying videos on the channel violated its policy against inciting violence. Since then, Trump’s account has been blocked from uploading new videos or his live stream.
YouTube also disabled comments below a video on Trump’s channel that appeared to have been restored on Friday. Shortly after his account was restored, many users began posting “welcome back” comments under old videos.
YouTube has never been Trump’s top social platform, but the relaunch of his channel will restore access to the massive video streaming platform with more than 2.6 million subscribers on his account.
As more platforms reactivate Trump’s account, some have stressed that they continue to limit what Trump can post, and that he could be suspended again.
In a statement, YouTube said Trump’s “channel will continue to be subject to our policies, just like any other channel on YouTube.” YouTube operates a strike policy that allows users to receive gradual suspensions based on the number and severity of violations.
Meanwhile, Meta revealed last month that it had introduced new guardrails for Trump’s account.
For now, the former president continues to post exclusively on his platform, Truth Social. I posted a series of six videos to Truth Social.
