White Beast is a new duo from Richmond who make a grungy, guttural, psychedelic version of sludge rock with just bass and drums. (Their bandcamp tags include the genre names “post-butt-rock” and “anarcho-butt-rock,” both of which, in my opinion, are interesting.) Drummer Sam Roberts has played in punk bands like Fried Egg and Private Hell, but I’m the only one I know. Friday’s Gorilla He’s Biscuit Show White Because he told me about the Beast. Singer/bassist Jeffrey Retberg, formerly in the Baltimore band Beachmover, released his EP with another drummer a few years ago under the name White Beast.
On Friday, White Beast released their first single as a duo, “Fencewalker.” It’s a heavy, melodious rumination about being told things are going well in the world when things are clearly not going well. Jeffrey Retberg shot and edited the video for the song with Caroline Hubert. In the clip, a doll in a burning house watches the world fall apart on TV.
The self-released ‘Fencewalker’ is available now on Bandcamp, and the White Beast album is due out later this year.
