Spotify AI DJ is the latest artificial intelligence to be introduced to the music streaming service. For years we’ve provided algorithms to choose recommendations and playlists for you, but this AI DJ takes it one step further.
The DJ itself is named DJ X, after Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier Jernigan. It’s his voice that you hear while the music is playing, and the small snippets of commentary you hear between songs are Jernigan’s voice generated by his AI.
Even if it doesn’t become a regular part of your listening habits, it’s well worth at least giving Spotify AI DJ a try. And we have everything you need to know about it.
What is Spotify AI DJ?
Spotify describes AI DJ as “a whole new way to listen to music on Spotify and connect even more deeply with the artists you love,” and that it “knows you and your musical tastes so that you can choose what to choose.” It describes it as a “personalized AI guide that can to play for you. “
You can think of this as a more personal version of your recommended playlist, as if you had your own personal DJ picking the songs for you. Of course, it’s the software-generated voice that does all the talking. The music you listen to is selected through a combination of algorithms and hundreds of music experts consulted by Spotify.
Instead of just listening to each track, there are occasional DJ-style audio breaks that give you background information about why you’re listening to certain groups’ tracks or which artists you’re hearing for the first time. Spotify is clearly trying to mimic the style of real radio, but with a particular focus on the user.

Please note that at the time of writing this guide, Spotify AI DJ is still labeled as a beta product. That said, Spotify is polishing it up to be the best, so it’s already pretty easy to use, albeit with a few bugs and inconsistencies to be expected.
Spotify AI DJ: Where is it available? Why can’t I see it?
Spotify AI DJ has been released and is now available for users in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland. Please note that you need to sign up for a Spotify Premium account to use this feature. At this time DJ is not available for people on the free plan.

How does Spotify AI DJ work?
In the Spotify app, House Select a tab and tap music. Scroll down to find AI DJ. The AI DJ will greet you with the message “Good evening” (or variations of it, depending on the time of day).Tap + Use the (plus) button to add DJs to your Spotify library to make them easier to find again.
Tap the play button in the bottom right corner of the AI DJ tile to start the audio introduction. It then selects some tracks from your recent viewing history, followed by some new selections. As usual, you’ll see controls for pausing and resuming playback and skipping back and forth between tracks.
There’s also a heart button so you can like a track and easily find it in your Spotify library. After every few songs, the DJ’s voice comes back and starts mixing different music, usually providing a bit of background information about what’s to come (just like a real DJ would do). ). Spotify AI DJ helps you dive deeper into your favorite genres by diving into the distant past, reminding you of songs you’ve long forgotten or introducing you to songs you might never have otherwise discovered.
