Acclaimed Bay Area rock band Swell, formed in 1990, have announced a 14-date European tour in five countries in April in honor of the band’s late David Frill, who died last year.
Officially called the ‘Everyday Sunshine Tour’, the tour kicks off with a ‘quaint village warm-up show’ in Belgium on April 8th and continues through Germany, the Netherlands and France before continuing on April 22nd. It ends at the Rum Club in Valencia, Spain (below).
The group has stated that they will perform “favorite songs from their first four albums”.
It’s only fitting that the band return to Europe, where the group came into their own. In 1990, Ruffle, Sean Kirkpatrick, and Marc Signorelli were busking in the streets of Europe, mostly Spain, when their self-titled debut album began blasting on college radio. As a result, promoters called to book the swell, and the group ended up earning support slots for Mazzy Star.

Sent by the band’s drummer Sean Kirkpatrick pole star On the band’s reunion and tribute tour:
Swell singer, principal songwriter and co-founder David Freel passed away on April 12, 2022. David was a true original. The songs he developed and the lyrics he wrote are like no other. His unique approach to life inspired everything he did and everything he touched.
Never again will the swell be like it once was. However, the original members are united in tribute to David and the band’s formative years. In his short 14-day itinerary, they will tour Europe in April 2023, playing in 5 countries and performing favorite songs from his first 4 albums.

Life is strange, swells are strange, and the band is reunited to play their library of music (the first four albums anyway) live again, but without singer/guitarist David Freel. . David, who sadly passed away in 2022, may have grown weary of the idea of a 2023 European tour “in honor of…”.

Rewind a little. In the late ’80s, drummer Sean Kirkpatrick placed an ad on San Francisco’s Rough Trade Records, and David responded. After back and forth attempts to make music together, Sean leaves for Northern Spain and stays there for a while. David comes to visit. The Pixies play in a small Basque village. During the show, David and Sean knew it was time to make music. They go back to San Francisco’s Tenderloin (an area that’s a bit dodgy, has cheap rent, warehouse space, constant “hear” music day and night, and doesn’t really care). It was here that Swell was born, the first LP was named ‘Swell’ and produced LP #2. “Good…?” closes the door on the tenderloin era with album #3. “41” (my house number above all else). These three albums of his are a mix of his noises in the underground streets steeped in mics and songs created in this place Swell called home. I never thought of using the word “trilogy”.
Lineup addition starting with “Eh …?” We saw Monte Vallier on bass, John Dettman-Lytle on guitar and Niko Wenner on guitar (for live shows and guest recordings) all being part of his Swell sound. With this line-up, Sewell traveled mainly in Europe, appearing on various tours, festivals and even John Peel’s BBC sessions. Making his ‘acting’ debut with one or two of his songs in the film, ‘The Dukes of Groove’, his Swell’s quirky vibes had audiences hooked. Signed to Beggars Banquet in Europe and American Recordings in the U.S. for songs like “Get High,” “At Long Last,” “Down,” “Forget About Jesus,” “Song Seven,” and “Sunshine Everyday.” Added. And “What I’ve Always Wanted” is a little more exposed.
Before finally leaving San Francisco, with the original line-up still (more or less) complete, they began work on album #4. “Too Many Days I Don’t Think About Anything” It’s fitting to end this story here, so I’ll leave it here. Just like this album made his ending with Swell…that’s right. David and Monte went on to record two of his albums, after which David continued with several of his solo releases. Sean and David reunited in 2003 to record “Whenever You’re Ready”.
Swell will get together to see you play live this April, performing their first four albums in honor of Swell’s diehard fans and David Freel. Sorry David, we are thinking of you.
