SHUSHU/TONG returns to Shanghai Fashion Week to unveil its Fall/Winter 2023 collection, Backrooms. In a showcase that evokes dark features, the brand presents a signature reinterpretation of uniforms with an eerie and dynamic twist.
Known for its experimentation with dark femininity and soft features, the brand’s key elements include double necklines, embellished diamonds, and masterful tailoring complemented by diverse textures. As for the colorway, the brand perfectly juxtaposed colorful pink and blue pastels with black, gray and neutral tones.
Additionally, in an ongoing partnership with Chinese jewelry brand YVMIN, SHUSHU/TONG offers body adornments in the form of lip studs.

How was the concept of ‘Backroom’ built? Did your thinking and place in your creative practice lead you to this personally?
We have always been fascinated by the mystique of this topic. I love the idea of finding strangeness and thrills in seemingly ordinary spaces.
The collection is “reminiscent of the dark faces of everyday life.” How was it to tap into the ‘dark’ side of the brand?
We are always drawn to the danger and uniqueness of girls. I think it’s a lot of fun to play with this juxtaposition. Tongtong and I are also big fans of the cult movie Les Fruits de La Passion, which draws a lot of our inspiration.
Talk about “uniform aesthetics”. How is SHUSHU/TONG creating a new story for modern uniforms, and what does this mean for today’s audience?
In our process, we mostly design for ourselves, or an imaginary female version of me (the scrunchie). I’ve always had a desire to design uniforms, experimenting with shirt detailing, gingham fabrics and girly tailoring, so I’ve incorporated this aesthetic into my collections over and over again. Now it’s our brand DNA. We feel like we are part of it and our customers love it.
What was the process of collaborating with YVMIN?
We have been working with YVMIN for several years and they are really experts when it comes to accessories. After that, we will continue to communicate throughout the season, working together to build ideas. Working with them is always a very happy process.
What do you think the growing popularity of body adornments and facial accessories says about jewelry and self-expression today?
We believe it’s good for people to express themselves more positively. If it’s a bold attitude, even better!

Steadily move forward and upward. We are looking forward to our next development!
