The U.S. National Weather Service issued a series of severe thunderstorm monitors and warnings for the Chicago area during Wednesday morning’s commute as gusty winds and frequent lightning affected the area.
By 8:00 a.m., most of the warnings had moved out of the Chicago area, but severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect for many areas and parts of northwest Indiana were still under tornado warnings.
A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for LaPorte County in northwestern Indiana until 8:45 a.m.
Earlier tornado warnings in DeKalb County were allowed to expire, as did severe thunderstorm warnings in several other counties, including LaSalle and Kendall.
Strong thunderstorms are possible in some areas until late in the morning, but after a cold front passes through the area, temperatures can drop rapidly and gusts of wind in excess of 40 miles per hour are possible in some areas. There is a nature.
Heavy rain continues in areas including Lake, Kane, DuPage, Cook, Kendall, Grundy, Will, and Kankakee counties in Illinois, and Lake, Porter, Newton, and Jasper counties in Indiana.
