Naval Station Coronado Security and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) were investigating an incident near the front gate of Naval Station Coronado Friday night that led to a lockdown.
Around 10:30 p.m., several patrol cars from the Naval Police Department and the Coronado Police Department were seen surrounding the gates near Third Avenue and Alameda Boulevard.
A spokesperson for the base, Kevin Dixon, said gate guards “engaged” a driver who went through the gate and didn’t stop, calling the vehicle a “gaterunner,” but no further details were given. Dixon said the driver was taken into custody.
Dixon later confirmed to NBC 7 that a security guard at the base opened fire during the incident.
The base was cordoned off, multiple gates at Naval Air Station North Island were closed, and security personnel checked the rest of the base as a precaution, Dixon said.
Witnesses at the scene told NBC 7 that they were awakened by nearly 20 gunshots.
“I was actually asleep when the car passed the intersection. I woke up to nearly 20 gunshots. I saw the sirens go off and a car came up. Get out to see what it is,” said a witness.
Base security at Naval Base Coronado consists of a “mixed Master-at-Arms (MA)”. [enlisted] Dixon told NBC 7, “Whether that mix was there tonight or not. [if it was] All MA,” he added.
