The Wizards owner got candid on a recent podcast with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment CEO Ted Leonsis gives the Washington Wizards an ‘F’ rating, especially considering the team has only made one playoff appearance in the past five years. I admitted that I would. Speaking on The Woj Pod, hosted by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, he said:
You can listen to the podcast here. This podcast also includes an interview with Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger.
The other points Leonsis mentioned are the ones that struck me when I finally listened to it today.
- Leonsis, like others with MSE, insists on reporting to someone. Leonsis said he was reporting to fans, and he admitted they were disappointed.
- Perseverance is a good thing, and it’s been proven by the Washington Mystics and the Capitals. But after firing Tommy Shepard, Leonsis wanted to bring in talent from outside the Monumental Basketball bubble.
- Just like the NHL, building the NBA through drafts doesn’t work. In the NBA, some players make tens of millions of dollars, while others make veteran margins. But it’s nothing like Bradley Beal, and supermax players are “50 times better” than those on two-way deals.
Again, the era of Wizards Basketball winger and Will Dawkins is just beginning. Press conferences and interviews are great, but they’re only part of a new beginning. Hopefully, the season ahead will see us see long-term success.
