Lynyrd Skynyrd has announced that the band will continue following the death of its last surviving founding member, Gary Rossington, last month.
After talking with each other and the families of past members, the band came to the conclusion that the group should continue to tour and perform.
In addition to the announcement, the band has shared an extensive list of dates, including a previously announced string of tours with ZZ Top and Sharply Dressed Man for late summer and fall. and will pay tribute to it.
“I recently lost my husband and partner of over 41 years,” reads a statement from Rossington’s widow, Dale, who plays in the band. , a friend, but most importantly, a world-class musician and songwriter.
“It has been my honor and privilege to share the stage with him over the years. Music is greater than me or anyone else.”
“Gary made it known that there was an opportunity to express how timeless music can be, and it has always been his goal to keep the music alive for the brothers. Because he spent his life making that dream a reality for Ronnie, Allen, Steve, and everyone else over the years.
“In the last few years he was physically unable to take the stage with the current line-up, but he supported them in every way possible. Thanks to the members, we will continue and carry on his legacy and music to the next generation.”
Vocalist Johnny Van Zant (brother of Skynyrd founding member Ronnie Van Zant) also issued a statement.
“Gary wasn’t just a brother, a bandmate and a friend,” wrote Van Zandt. “I think he loved me as much as I loved him. Gary started this band with his brothers Ronnie and Allen and has stood the test of time, leaving us all with a musical legacy that spans three generations of fans.
“The music they made, and the music we have made together since 1987, was always meant to be experienced live. We feel that music must continue to come together and be loved and enjoyed by all.
The band’s upcoming tour mate, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, recently joined Slash and Warren Haynes as part of an all-star tribute to Rossington at this weekend’s CMT Awards. A full list of Skynyrd’s live shows can be found below.
