“We’re an American Band” is still an FM staple, decades after it hit number one. billboard It entered the charts in 1973 and became one of grand funk’s most famous hits. Founding drummer Don Brewer is credited with writing and singing lead vocals on the song, and he fondly recalled its origins in a press release for his forthcoming tour.
“‘We’re an American Band’ came to mind when we were flying from town to town on the ‘Phoenix Tour’ in 1972,” said Brewer. “We were being sued by our former manager, Terry Knight, and he was trying to stop us from performing.” was the first thing that came to my mind, and I wrote the song based on that line. Freddie King playing poker and staying up all night, his four young Chiquitas in Omaha, sweet sweet Connie in Little Rock, and finally, “We’re an American band. It sounds great.” I feel lucky and blessed every time I perform live.”
