(CNN) Scandal-plagued Congressman George Santos filed paperwork with federal regulators on Tuesday to formally declare his candidacy for 2024.
A formal declaration does not mean that the beleaguered lawmakers will have to seek re-election. His action follows last month’s request from the Federal Election Commission to declare his intentions after crossing the funding threshold at which Long Island Republicans must submit a candidacy statement.
When asked by CNN’s Melanie Zanona last week if she would run for re-election, Santos replied “maybe” and admitted that some Republicans had urged her not to seek re-election. But he said he was focused on his current job in Congress.
Santos, who lied extensively about his resume, education and family history, is facing federal and local investigations into his finances, and the House Ethics Committee said he may have been involved in illegal activities in the 2022 election. We are investigating whether there is
Tuesday was the deadline for Santos to respond to requests from federal regulators. The freshman has repeatedly faced questions about the accuracy of his campaign filings with the FEC and the identity of his accountant.
In particular, his candidacy statement said he did not expect to spend personal funds on his reelection bid.
Some of the biggest questions about Santos’ campaign activities center around the financial windfall that allowed Republicans to report a $705,000 personal loan for a successful 2022 campaign. In Santos’ previous bid for Congress, his personal financial disclosure form listed no assets and a salary of $55,000.
He said he made his money through his company, the Devolder Organization, but did not list any of Devolder’s clients in the financial disclosure he had to file as a candidate last year.
