As a preface, I no longer use Spotify, so there are no individual horses in this race. But it’s been a hot topic lately, and for good reason, and for those of you who haven’t heard, Spotify has debuted an all-new design coming soon to his mobile app. So far the Windows desktop client seems fine. But considering that anyone with a PC has an Android phone, or if he’s a Spotify customer, an iPhone, he’s going to be affected.
Spotify’s redesign has been likened to Instagram and TikTok, which tells me they’re trying to be more like a social media platform than a music service. Try to maximize the time you spend on your eyes, not just your ears. have understood. Business must make money.
But I’m an old-school music listener, and all of this sounds awful to me. This is one of many products sent to Microsoft’s giant technology graveyard. It had everything I wanted. There was music and a simple, clean app. No fluff. why can’t we get it again?
Groove music was underrated
My introduction to Xbox Music (later Groove Music) was, of course, Windows Phone. I simply gravitated toward Microsoft’s music service because the established music services at the time were poorly supported. OK, I also enjoyed MixRadio (RIP), but as a supplement rather than a replacement.
However, Microsoft’s music service was underrated. At the time, whatever it was called, it was just a good service.Unsurprisingly, on Windows Phone, both Xbox Music and Groove Music perfectly mirrored his UI across the system . But they weren’t cluttered with junk. The app was clean, well laid out, looked great, and felt great to use. “Media Player” may be the only remnant of Windows apps, but it’s still lonely.
The music selection has always been great too, in my opinion. We’ve never judged a music streaming service with the largest library. The key is finding the music you want to listen to, and Groove never fails to do that. It was a music service for listening to music. It’s everything I ever wanted. That’s all I want now.
Why should everything be a social app?
Microsoft won’t bring Groove Music back. So you have to choose the best alternative. For me it was Apple Music. Because it was the closest I could get settled (and I’m on an iPhone so it was easy).
The reason I couldn’t go back to Spotify was initially that it pushed podcasts so hard and seemed to ignore what I actually wanted to listen to. Apple Music doesn’t have podcasts built-in. But it also does a good job of recommending good music to me.
But this Spotify redesign is a bigger indictment of where everything seems to be going these days. With services like TikTok and features like Stories proliferating, we want them all to be the same. I feel The same social space fighting for attention.
Should you push us every time, via video, short form, or otherwise? Do you want every app open and your story front and center?
No there is not. Please let me listen to music in peace.
