CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metropolitan School District provided an update on the search for its next leader at its school board meeting Monday night.
About 12 to 15 CEO candidates will be interviewed via Zoom in the coming weeks, according to Cleveland President and CEO Anne Bingham. Bingham said his second interview with a small group of candidates will likely take place before the field of finalists is narrowed down to his two or his three.
Interviews with finalists will be held in late April. The Board then submits its final nominations for CMSD’s next CEO to Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb for approval.
As part of the Cleveland School Board’s plans to select a successor to current CEO Eric Gordon, the CMSD community may once again be invited to participate in the process, this time during the finalist interview phase.
Bingham announced that CMSD offers three ways to help the community choose its next CEO.
- Submit a nomination or self-nomination for possible participation in an interview panel.
- Suggest interview questions that the interview panel could consider asking the CEO candidate.
- Watch live-streamed and recorded CEO candidate interviews and submit feedback.
The interview panel, most of which is randomly selected, includes students, parents, guardians, teachers, principals, union leaders and community partners. Anyone in the community has the opportunity to nominate themselves or others to join the panel and have candidates interviewed.

Last month, Chicago-based search firm Alma Advisory Group revealed data from weeks of community engagement at various forums on their hopes and expectations for the next CMSD leader. About 3,700 of her CMSD staff and community members provided input through the survey, and 226 participants attended his three community gatherings. Additionally, over 1,200 participants participated in interviews and focus groups.
The community identified three top concerns for CMSD’s incoming CEO. Commitment to school safety, supporting the health and well-being of students and staff, and improving student achievement. Respondents added that the most important skill for district leaders is strong communication skills, putting students’ best interests first and soliciting/response to feedback from students, staff, and parents. rice field.
Safety and security will be the most pressing issues for the person named to replace Gordon. Community members are concerned about safety both on school grounds and on school routes, especially when using public transportation.
CMSD sought to address safety issues through a new partnership with the Cleveland Police Department. This will give the officer access to the exterior surveillance cameras of his 10 district buildings, with more planned for the future.
Gordon announced in September that he would be stepping down when the school year ended on June 30, 2023. Gordon, who has been CEO of Cleveland Schools since 2011, told the school board and Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, “That’s enough time to do a thorough, high-quality search for our next CEO.”
“The conditions are precisely in place to hand over the baton and ensure our next CEO advances the progress and momentum we have built together,” Gordon said in his final school address.
