What aspects of the book were most important to keep when it was first adapted for film, and what did you want to add to make it fit for the screen?

Kate, how was the first time you saw this movie? Was there a moment in particular when the book felt really encapsulated?
Kate DiCamillo: Yes. Julia talked about that moment about Peter recognizing the elephant and the elephant needing to go home: an act of empathy. That’s her one, but what really flipped my mind was a very simple scene around Gloria and Leo’s table. They were feeding Peter. Peter asked what he was eating and Gloria said “stew.” That line was so beautiful and so heartfelt, it made me see everything this kid didn’t have and give it to him, those two moments of him are very important to me. is.
Wendy, you were a VFX supervisor in the past, how did that knowledge help you as a director on this film?
Wendy Rogers: I’ve been working as a filmmaker for a long time as a visual effects supervisor and have been really blessed to have worked so closely with great directors on some great projects. I also had some knowledge from what I had done in the past. Enough knowledge to know that there are people who can do it much better than I can. Wendy Rogers: Clouds are obviously very important. They are characters in books and movies. Their inspiration is a particular cloud formation called a mammary cloud. By the way, I like clouds. I love clouds of all kinds. I always shoot clouds. I feel like I can see it from anywhere in the world and it reminds me that we are all connected. So when I came across a story with clouds, it seemed very kind to me, “Well, there’s synchronicity there.”
But the Mammatus cloud formation is a surprisingly unrealistic and highly ominous cloud formation. Shapes were the inspiration for our clouds. I call it Boba Cloud because Boba Tea’s tapioca he reminded me of balls. But even with an element of surreal magical realism, we didn’t want the world to feel dark and oppressive. So we created a lighting system where the color of the light changes in the clouds to achieve a soft, diffuse lighting like the midnight sun.
