UMG wants Spotify, Apple Musc to ban most AI generated songs

Universal Music has issued a number of takedown requests against Spotify and Apple Music, alleging they infringe one or more of their copyrights on songs generated using AI. . Some songs are AI-generated covers of hit songs.

UMG has also asked Apple and Spotify to block AI systems from scraping music and lyrics from streaming services for use in future songs. According to the Financial Times, UMG sent the following email:

“We are aware that certain AI systems may be trained on copyrighted content without obtaining the necessary consent or paying compensation from the rights holders who own or create the content. It was… our artist’s.”
