(CNN) The leadership of the Houston Independent School District, the largest school district in Texas, will be replaced by a new board of directors appointed by the state school board, the school district announced Wednesday.
The Texas Department of Education intends to replace school district superintendents and school board directors “within the next few months,” the current school board said in a statement.
The intervention is taking place under a state law that allows states to remove district boards that have schools that do not meet certain state standards.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the acquisition was “troublesome, but not unexpected.”
Millard House II, who has been the principal since 2021, said the move “doesn’t discount the gains we’ve made across the district. I am confident that we will continue to do the work necessary to ensure that our performance improves.”
