It all started in Palm Desert, California. Sue took her room at the first dusty roadside motel she passed. It had a neon sign with a hot tub and a color TV lighting up the sky. Each Rookie song is a diary in motion. In “Extraordinary Life,” Sue whispers in her lover’s ear. “When you share my bed, you share my pain.” She negotiates with God in “Runaway Bride.” In “Palm Springs Cemetery,” she exclaims, “I’m buying my own pink flowers now,” a mournful cry of independence as she steps into the future.
On “Buttermilk Sky,” Sue confesses, “I didn’t know when I was happy, but I knew when I wasn’t.” In her moment of contemplation, she put a beautiful mess aside and sang, “Sometimes I wish I had noticed, I was loud and still could be loved.”
For all the richness of the album, listeners may be shocked that Sue Clayton isn’t real. Morgan Kibby plays the role of composer, songwriter, musician, remixer, sought-after collaborator and incredible talent. Her sonic resume is a guide to her most important artists of the last decade.
