Less than a year after Spotify acquired Heardle, the audio streamer has brought the music game to a standstill.
“Heardle will end on May 5th,” says a message on the service’s website. “Thanks for playing Hurdles, but unfortunately we have to say goodbye,” Spotify said in a note to Heardle users. and take a screenshot.”
When Spotify announced its acquisition of Heardle in July 2022, the company touted it as “a tool for discovering music,” and said, “Playing games is a way of life you may have forgotten about. Heardle launched in February 2022, based on a format pioneered by word-guessing game Wordle, which was acquired by The New York Times for over $1 million. In Heardle, the player has six attempts to identify the song as quickly and accurately as possible based on the opening note of the song.
Spotify has not explained why it is discontinuing Heardle sales. Company representatives did not respond to a request for comment. But given the decision, the game didn’t seem to produce the kind of lift in overall listening and engagement that Spotify had hoped for.
The identity of Heardle’s creator is kept secret. Before Spotify bought the game, variety interviewed the “London-based web and app designer” who founded Heardle, but declined to give his name as he requested anonymity.
Spotify has not disclosed how much it paid Heardle. Over the past few months, we’ve been looking to reduce operating costs. In January, Spotify announced it was laying off 6% of its workforce and announced a senior management reshuffle that included the departure of Dawn Ostroff, chief content and advertising business officer.
