A shooting at Rose State University in Midwest, Oklahoma, left a suspect in custody and one person dead, the city’s police chief said Monday.
Chief Sid Porter told reporters that the suspect and victim “met in the family”.
Authorities said the suspect’s wife and the victim, a 20-year-old man, both students, were leaving the school’s humanities building when the suspect confronted them and opened fire.
Officers assigned to patrol the campus received reports that a person had been shot, responded to the area and located the suspect, Porter said.
A police news release said a witness identified the shooter as “putting the gun in his backpack” after the shooting.
Authorities said the suspect “knelt down, raised his hands and said he surrendered” when confronted by officers.
According to online records, the suspect is being held in an Oklahoma County jail and charged with first-degree murder. I don’t know if they have lawyers.
Police did not identify the victim.
Porter said students and staff did a “great job” in responding to the incident at a community college east of Oklahoma City. He said the campus has had an active shooting practice over the past few weeks.
The website states that Rose State College is a two-year public university. It has over 13,000 students and over 60 academic programs.
‘We are currently experiencing active shootings on campus,’ says Rose State University i said it on twitter“Stay safe and follow the instructions of law enforcement officers. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.”
The lockdown was later lifted.
16CNN contacted the mayor’s office, the Midwest Police Department, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Rose State University for more information.
People on campus were asked to leave after the lockdown ended.
“Avoid the south side of the Humanities Administration Building. All remaining activities and classes for Monday, April 24 are cancelled.” A tweet from the university said.
The campus will also be closed on Tuesday, the school said, adding the tweet after Working to provide counseling services to those who need it.
