When it starts getting easier, make it harder again. This is the artist’s paradox. When seminal Midwestern rockers Venison revived their original line-up for their 25th anniversary show in 2016, it was all a thing of the past. And why? They had already amassed the best discography. No need to prove yourself. But Venison doesn’t seem content to rest on its laurels, but rather to continue. Forward!
input EC6a brand new EP released in March and the first recorded output since the reunion. I looked back on the above.
“When the original band reunited for V25,” vocalist Rick Fuller wrote in an email. (But), we all felt the need to keep things fresh to get new material. With the addition of a second guitarist, Alex Fuller (Rick’s son), the Venison is now a six-piece. EC6, which is also a clever nod to Michigan rock band MC5. Venison currently consists of Rick Fuller (vocals), Chris Jackson (guitar), Jon Olstadt (guitar), Alex Fuller (guitar), Todd Gitzlaff (bass) and Chris “Chicken” Weise (drums).
By 2020, the song was in nascent form and then a familiar refrain: COVID-19. Fuller writes: (Eventually), the band was able to record his basic tracks for five new songs at a drum farm in Menomonie, Wisconsin. ”
“The performance was live, first-take and recorded in just a few hours,” enthuses guitarist Chris Jackson. “It certainly captured the raw, taut venison rhythm section.”
Production was then moved to North Orbit, St. Paul. Jackson continues: (Track) ‘Greener Days’ probably has at least 10 of his guitars. ”
Slowly, Fuller said:
That’s right. EC6 14 minutes of Prime Venison. It features driving riffs, punchy percussion, raucous vocals, and hooks galore. The anthem opener ‘EC6’ or track 2’s wonderfully titled ‘Question the Geezer’ are proof of that.
And as I reflect on the swath of my life spent playing songs for this community, I ask the band that they continue to make music that matters today for a grateful audience. mean?
Guitarist John Orstatt said: I am so grateful for this band and friendship. ”
Fuller adds: You know, some fans of the new show were just kids when they first saw us in the early ’90s. I only dreamed of situations like this as a youth in his UWEC and here I am. ”
Back to Fuller about the fact that only five new songs were recorded for the EP. Does this mean we can expect more “venison gold” in the future?
EC6 CD available on Revival Records, digital download available on Spotify and Apple Music. You can also find venison on Facebook.
