White House press secretary Carine Jean-Pierre has asked not to be interviewed by Don Lemon as a condition of appearing on “CNN This Morning” this week, The Washington Post learned.
Jean-Pierre, a guest on Thursday’s Morning Show, revealed to CNN that he doesn’t want to go head-to-head with the pretentious anchor.
“The White House has asked Don not to interview her,” the source added.
A second source close to CNN said Jean-Pierre “refused” to continue if LeMond was asking questions.
Instead, the press secretary was interviewed by co-host Poppy Harlow on Thursday’s show.
An insider said Harlow was assigned to conduct the interview because the show’s staff had to “produce” Lemon, who has been in the spotlight for a string of on-air failures.
“He’s just constantly distracted,” said the person.
A rep for Jean-Pierre did not explain the reasons behind her request to CNN, according to sources.
Insiders speculated that it was most likely due to Anchor’s recent on-air failures, or perhaps a strained on-air exchange in the past.
“I won’t go into details of the conversation with the media, but as always, the anchor is the network’s call, not ours,” a rep for Jean-Pierre told the Post.
The White House later denied that Jean-Pierre wanted to do business with Lemon.
“Kaline never said this,” a rep said after the initial statement.
A CNN spokesperson declined to provide further details, saying only that “the decision to have Poppy conduct the interview was made solely by CNN.”
In February, Lemon made an embarrassing on-air sexist accusation that Nikki Haley, 51, was “not her prime,” infuriating staff and forcing Harlow to walk off the set.
When asked to comment on LeMond’s remarks at a press briefing, Jean-Pierre took the opportunity to offer his opinion.
“That’s clearly something that needs to be addressed,” she said cautiously, referring to CNN’s obligation to address Lemon’s remarks.
A press secretary then used the opportunity to highlight Biden’s own record of women’s empowerment, including women over the age of 40.
“Looking at this president’s administration, we’ve talked about numbers before, but there are more women in his senior advisors and senior staff,” Jean-Pierre said.
LeMond’s somewhat acrimonious relationship with Jean-Pierre last year prompted Newscaster to criticize Biden’s mental health last year as the New York Times reported that members of the Democratic Party were concerned about the CEO’s leadership abilities. Prior to that, the Post reported an off-air skirmish with “CNN This Morning” co-host Kaitlan Collins. In it, Lemon allegedly yelled at the young anchor for interrupting him on air.
A recent Variety exposure also revealed a history of alleged misogynistic behavior by Lemmon.
