ComingSoon Senior Editor Spencer Legacy said: royal cracker Jessica St. Clair, David Gborie, and Maile Flanagan star in Adult Swim’s newest animated series, which premieres April 2 at 11:00 PM ET/PT. The trio discussed the quirky characters and the differences between live and pre-recorded comedy delivery.
“Royal Crackers was once king of snacks, but the empire is crumbling,” reads the series synopsis. “When Theodore Hornsby Sr., the family patriarch and founder of a tyrannical company, falls into a ‘super-coma,’ the rest of the Hornsby family uses their lack of talent and business acumen to start Royal Crackers. I will try to lead you to the success of the past.”
Spencer Legacy: Jessica, Deb is a very fun character and despite marrying into a family she is just as crazy as the rest of her family. What is your favorite part about playing her?
Jessica St. Clair: We love fat being totally fat, right? She doesn’t care if anyone likes her. She’s not a shrinking violet. She is super aggressive. she’s really good at it. They have an awful product on hand, but it doesn’t stop her from really imagining that they can at least take over the snack world, and she’s fiercely protective of her family. When she gets to push, she karate-chops mutated chickens, as you know, if she has to.
David with Darby might at first think, ‘Oh, this is a family lawyer, he must be a wise man,’ but he’s going to be just as wild as the rest of the cast. Did you enjoy voicing the indigestion scene in particular?
David Gobory: I mean, it was amazing. Anything that lets you get really huge and scream, scream and go outside the norm is a lot of fun. Add diarrhea on top of that—what could be more fun than that? [Laugh].
Jessica St. Clair: Put it on crackers, baby! [Laugh].
David Gobory: It was a lot of fun. The guy is so silly and so real that there’s a lot of fun play in that.
Maile, Matt has his moments, but I think he’s probably the smartest, saneest member of the family. do you have?
Maile Flanagan: So the advantage is that he doesn’t talk much. [Laugh]I mean, boy, when I saw the opening scene of the pilot episode, I looked at those guys and was like, ‘Man, oh man. I can’t imagine Jessica saying every line she said at top level. Peak volume, energy, everything.
I’ve played roles like that – they’re exhausted. Something like, “Hey, I’m going to go to the buffet and pick another donut” or “How about a key lime pie?” In a way, I have an easy job, but I think he’s an observer. He is very careful with his wording. [Ruiz, creator] do it. It’s weird because I noticed a lot of him in the background just not talking.
Jessica, Deb is especially great in the edible episode. How did you record that?
Jessica St. Clair: Just thought what would happen if my real parents ate a lot of CBD gummies and it worked.I love the fact that this show has such wild stories and stories like this that feel like they could actually happen. think [Laugh]It was a lot of fun.
That’s a great way to put it. David, for the animated series, we pre-record and do a lot of takes, so the timing of the comedy is completely different. How does your approach to telling jokes change compared to stand-up and live action?
David Gobory: I feel like I have to trust myself a little more. Don’t laugh during the take — like acting, you’ll try a lot. I said a few lines and Jason came back and said ‘I don’t think so’ or ‘Let’s start from here’. That’s what makes it fun. Even for stand-up and live-action, I don’t bite my apples very often. Now if something changes dramatically, you have the space to do it. So time makes a big difference and I really appreciate it.
Maile, as Matt gets a little crazy, the ventriloquist dummy really shines in the episode.
Maile Flanagan: First, I was like, “What? What’s going to happen?” [Laugh]I think I went in and quietly panicked when I read it. So I had to come up with some ideas. I threw them at Jason and then we worked together, so it was fun and supportive.
I think a lot of people have scripts. He’s not, and that’s what makes the show and all the characters and performances pop. Please.” And I recorded it over and over again, and I think it turned out great. Of course, I had no idea what it would be like. Oddly enough, this is his second time having to do a ventriloquist voice in two months.
Quite a niche!
Maile Flanagan: I think it will show up on your resume.
Jessica St. Clair: Check your horoscope. something might happen
Jessica, Deb has a lot of great, very punchy lines in every episode. Looking back on Season 1, do you have a favorite joke or stream?
Jessica St. Clair: Oh, listen to this when I have more coffee in my system. Because I don’t remember a particular coffee. [Laugh]But one of my favorite scenes is when I have a grocery cart fight with my actual best friend in real life. Lennon Parham playing my nemesis. It’s from now on. But you know, it’s hard to remember. Literally every line these characters say is funny. I think he’s one of those shows you can watch episodes over and over again, but it’s so fast you hear more and more jokes.
David, we talked a little bit about delivery differences, and you do a lot of both live action and voice acting. Which format do you prefer or do you have preferences?
David Gobory: i like to do both of them. The voice acting is more… everything is more concise. The days are getting shorter. You can just go in, do a lot and leave. So I like it as opposed to 15 hours on set or something. It’s a pretty good gig. No dress code, no makeup.yeah i’m a big fan of voice actors [Laugh].
Maile, one of your most famous roles is Naruto. Naruto is the most energetic and excited person ever. You said Matt was quieter and awkward. Do you have a preference for which character to voice, or do they both have their strengths?
Maile Flanagan: whatever pays better [Laugh]It’s nice not to have hours of constant screaming, but god I hope this show lasts as long as Naruto. It’s long. But I think this show has a long way to go. I can’t wait to see where it goes.
