AKRON (WJW) — The Ohio Attorney General’s office released a video statement of the eight police officers involved in the shooting of Jayland Walker on Thursday.
A video interview conducted by the officer with the investigator was released days after a special grand jury refused to indict the officer in the fatal shooting. He said the officer’s face was blurred and his name had not been released.
“I was kind of shocked,” said one officer. “I couldn’t believe it happened.”
In the video, officers could be heard describing the car chase and shots fired from Walker’s car that led to the fatal encounter.
“I saw him put his hand in the waistband area,” another officer said. “Again, like I said, it’s where people store their firearms and weapons.”
Prosecutors say Walker fired one shot at an officer during the initial chase. Then he got out of the car and ran.
“At the time, I was risking my life and I was afraid of all the officers on the scene,” one officer told detectives.
He and all the other officers said they thought Walker was armed when he took off on foot.
Prosecutors say Walker was unarmed when officers shot him. A gun, a loaded magazine, and a wedding ring were found in the driver’s seat of his car after the shooting.
“He slows down, turns around and puts his hand on the waistband as quickly as he pulls out a gun,” the officer said in an interview with investigators. “He pointed at the officer and I raised my gun and started firing.”
The officer said he fired 18 times.
Walker was shot 46 times by eight police officers. Investigators asked some police officers why they had so many shots.
One officer said he didn’t know where the gun was and shot a lot because the walker on the ground was still moving. Another officer said he thought Walker was shooting him.
“I heard gunshots, but I didn’t hear gunshots from people to my left or right,” the officer said. “I thought the gunshots I was hearing were coming from him.”
