2020 was a breakthrough year for singer-songwriters Nat BaserShe had just released her debut album Is this aggressive and noisy?,to her Australian Music Awards name. Three years and one pandemic later, she’s touring America with a new single. “Misery Addiction”and the release of a second album on the horizon.
I caught up with Nat at New Colossus Festival In a one-on-one interview, we talk about her latest releases, her latest tour, and her songwriting process.
Hey Nat, thanks for joining me. Let’s get started right away. Do you have a new album coming out?
Yes, we are preparing for release. what do they call it A sophomore album?
Yes, that’s right.
I don’t think I ever said that. i like the sound of it Sophomore.
It is titled Strange Adrenaline and is targeted for a September 2023 release. We haven’t released anything in about two and a half years, so it’s very exciting. Recorded in my band at Sonar Studios with producer Robert Manase (Julia Jacqueline) and mixed by Burke Reed (Courtney Barnett).
Also new single “Misery Addiction” just came out. Listen anywhere you goThis is the first single from my next album, my sophomore album.
For those listening to the single for the first time, what is it about and what does it mean to you?
Yeah, it’s like a portrait when you’re feeling down. Hence the title “Addicted to Misery”. I think it’s an attempt to explore that concept through conversations and travels. The real feeling of trying to help someone you love and at the same time feeling helpless. [Editor’s note: this is a reference to Nat supporting her mom and her battle with cancer.]
Your music seems to be shaped by your experiences. What is your writing process like?
I think the best way to put it is that my process is “constantly evolving.” I am constantly changing and growing as a person. I try not to have a solid process. I think it might limit the possible ideas. I try to have some sense of direction, but I like to go with whatever I feel and see where it leads me.
I often write in this stream-of-consciousness style in the morning. I found that it brought out a lot of interesting things from me, things you wouldn’t expect.
Who inspires you? Specifically, who has been involved in this project?
all the greats. I think there are many great thinkers, storytellers, writers, musicians and philosophers. From Patti Smith to Bob Dylan to The Beatles. Also a lot of new artists and a lot of producers like John Parrish and Rick Rubin.
How is your new one the same or different compared to what you’ve done in the past?
This is the only solo songwriter project I have ever pursued. In other words, it’s the most “I” and the story is more personal.
He played in several punk bands in high school and in a heavy rock band in college, without any real success. People didn’t really like gigging or anything like that. I was also in a folk band, but it was all for fun.
This was the first serious project I wanted to pursue and explore. There was a part that was a mystery to me. I felt this burning desire to live a more artistic life and realized how important it was to me. I did.
You’re on tour in the US, how was your experience so far?
LA was my first stop.we did a little video performance Yellow House SessionsA couple of photographers and videographers shoot for their channel in Pasadena, California. These videos will be published in the coming months.
They also performed at showcase events at hotels in West Hollywood. we found new music, with Grant Owens and it was just wild. It was our first international show, so it was very exciting.
Have a story you’d like to share?
Found a food truck in LA. They are so much better than the restaurant and we were hooked eating burritos every night at 1am every night the food he truck is there so you shouldn’t be eating before going to bedMore .
