April 5, 2023: Saxophonist Dave McMurray return with Grateful Dedication 2the follow-up to his acclaimed 2021 tribute album, once again finds the saxophonist reimagining Grateful Dead songs with a gritty, soulful Detroit sound. Oteil Burbridge, Bob James, Jamie Johnson, Greg Riceand Don Was.
Grateful Dedication 2 A nine-song set offering Dead favorites and deep cuts, including “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower,” and “To Lay Me Down.” McMurray’s Detroit Associate guitarist Wayne Gerald, keyboardist Maurice O’Neill, pianist Luis Resto, bassist Ibrahim Jones, drummer Jeff Canady and percussionist Larry Fratangelo return to the fold.
“My recent journey into the world of the Grateful Dead began when the band from Detroit and I went to a clubhouse studio in upstate New York. The place, with master engineer Elliott Shiner in tow, and spending four days and nights just making music with his brain, Vibe was just right, resulting in Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Grateful. A dark, sparse, emotional vehicle in Dead’s mind… Detroit style.”
Released in 2021, Grateful Deadication was an unexpectedly vibrant album. Highlights of the set featured Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir and vocalist Betty Lovett, and included a powerful remake of “Loser” and an extended version of “Dark Star.”
Reflecting on the first time he heard the Grateful Dead, McMurray said: I noticed that the song had a nice melody, but with a liberating feeling like Miles Davis’ Electric Period. The music was catchy, psychedelic, raw, and, much like Weather Report, had this idea of nobody soloing/everyone soloing. The more I listened to it, the more I realized that these songs would eventually become my vehicle for jazz expression.
During the heyday of The Dead’s constant touring, McMurray was touring himself, joining Unclassifiable Was (Not Was) from 1981 with current Blue Note president Don Was. , The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Hallyday, Gladys Knight, Albert King, Nancy Wilson, KEM, Bootsy Collins, Herbie Hancock, Jeri Allen , Bob James.
In 2018, McMurray joined Don Was for an all-star set at the Hadley Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. The performance included a surprise appearance from Weir, who recently joined Woz and drummer Jay Lane in his new band, The Wolf Brothers, and a rendition of the Dead classic “Days Between.”
Grateful Dedication 2 Besides being a heartfelt celebration of the Grateful Dead’s incredible songcraft, the imagination and soul found throughout the album demonstrate McMurray’s wide range of influences, including jazz, pop, rock, soul, reggae, R&B and gospel.
