‘I was a huge fan of this show before I even started working on it,’ admits ‘The Great’ makeup and hair artist Jenny Rose-McLean. In a recent webchat she said: “The script is great, content-rich, and funny. There are so many elements to it. It’s about getting the tone right and making sure everything works together.” Check out the full exclusive interview above.
“The Great” is touted as “an occasional true story” about the rise of the nation. Catherine II in Russia in the 18th century. This comedy is produced by Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara and cast for The Favourite. Elle Fanning in the title role. The series’ third season premiered on Hulu in May, and saw Catherine’s eventual rule over Russia.
Rose-McLean explains: What really mattered this season was getting more of Catherine’s world. She added more natural hair to various characters and slightly less powder in some wigs. It tries to find a balance in how the show and characters progress, but it’s still rooted in history so everything feels authentic to its time. ”
The climax of the season is episode 6, “Ice,” with a scene with Catherine and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) in the snow. Rose-McLean revealed, “We shot it in the middle of summer, so we were trying to make it look cold.” His cheeks and nose get cold. There, the make-up was taken seriously to give it authenticity, and then the underwater work was done. ”
In this season, Catherine will have a very long badminton match. Rose McLean says: We had water spray and glycerin on them. Part of hair and makeup storytelling is throwing in some of that work for the audience. Two hours into anything and I’m already drenched in sweat. In other words, you are telling the story of what happened before the audience participated. ”
Last year, Rose-McLean won an Emmy Award for Contemporary Hairstyling for her work on “Bridgerton.” She believes that great hairstyling “has to be done for the scene.” You can have this super awesome hairstyle, but if it distracts from what’s going on on screen, it won’t work. ”
