The second season of the CBS comedy tells the story of a couple who inherit an estate haunted by those who died there over the years. Diverse groups of ghouls include Vikings, hippies, Revolutionary soldiers, and Native Americans. Hetty Woodstone is one of the ghosts, the manor woman, and the original owner of Woodstone’s rural estate. Wysocky said: “We can make a devastating attack on the weaknesses of a period in American history. All these characters come from troubled times.”
The season’s penultimate episode, “Who Dunnit,” follows the murder of Prohibition-era jazz singer Alberta (Daniel Pinnock) finally solved it. At this time, she confesses that Hetty knew the truth all along. Wisocki says: “I had to think a lot about this secret she kept for 100 years: that her son murdered the woman who became her close friend. We didn’t know that information until a week before shooting, and I had to think about how all the choices I’d made up to that point could plausibly fit together. What I’ve found is that the lies we tell ourselves often turn out to be true, because that’s how it should be.”
The season also sees Hetty learning to indulge herself in the washing machine and getting into a secret relationship with stockbroker ghost Trevor (Asher Grodman). The actress explains: “That was the beginning of a sexual awakening for Hetty. The fact that we put together brothers who aren’t wearing ridiculous pants is a heavenly combination, and I’m a woman 150 years older than me, and it was a lot of fun.
