Kim Woo Bin Talks Black Knight
Screen rant: As Black Knight is based on a webtoon, did you read the source material to understand the world of 5-8, or did you base your work on the script? Generally speaking, outside of your current project What is your approach to research when it comes to portraying existing characters??
Kim Woo Bin: First question, when I was offered the role, I saw a webtoon. The series is based on webtoons, so of course I read it. But even though the work is based on a webtoon, it’s a completely different story and a completely different world. I’ve read it, but mostly focused on the script. When I’m prepping a project or building a character, I try to get a lot of my cues from the script itself first. Then I often talk to the director about who this person is and try to imagine the parts that aren’t on the page. And since each person has a different side, I try to find common ground with characters I meet for the first time. Then, as time goes on, I try to expand from there to get closer to my character in that way.
How would you describe the world and story you created? Black Knight of netflix?
Kim Woo Bin: To put it simply, air pollution is so bad that the Korean peninsula has turned into a desert wasteland. There is a legendary courier called 5-8, a black knight who delivers oxygen and other supplies and daily necessities to people. It is also the story of Sawol, a refugee who aims to become a black knight. Together they want to oppose the Tenmei Group, the de facto omnipotent rulers of that universe.
Previously worked with Choi Wi-seok master How was your collaboration with him this time?
Kim Woo Bin: Working on the movie was pure joy and a lot of fun. I absolutely loved the opportunity to collaborate with him again and was so happy when he offered me the role. he said to me I had that kind of trust, so it was a very good experience. It shouldn’t, but it can happen and that’s why it was more intriguing to me.I was also very interested in the thoughts and actions of 5-8 and was very drawn into this character. I really liked the whole process of working with him on this project.
you did before alien, a similar genre, but you’re relatively new to science fiction. Do you feel more comfortable doing it the second time, or are there any challenges?
Kim Woo Bin: Sci-fi is, of course, a challenge for actors because they have to act based on their imagination. But I think it was easier this time because he’s only just started working on Erinoid, but he’s been flying around with beams out of his palm for 13 months. It is possible for me. Accept any role. It was great to be able to participate in this project. Working with the same team on this show made it a lot easier.
Screen Rant: 5-8 spends much of its drama teaching Sa-wol, but Seol-ah does it in a very different way, too. What was the actual relationship like between you, Esom, and Kang Yoo-seok?
Kim Woo Bin: Esom is actually my debut work 13 years ago. [KBS2’s White Christmas in 2011], so I have a special place in my heart for her.I was very happy to meet her again in this work.Since we debuted in the same series, somehow we have this friendship. Kang Yoo-seok is a very good actor. He is very cheerful and has a lot of energy. I somehow understood why the director chose him because he was so good like Sawol. . I immersed myself in the moment and tried to savor every moment I had with him. I talked a lot to
How would you describe the theme of Black Knight What do you want to leave behind for your audience?
Kim Woo Bin: I always think that everyone has the right to be loved and to be happy. When I was first offered the role, I had the same mindset as 5-8, so we had a lot in common. That’s why I was so curious about him and wanted to know more about him. We hope this series will reassure you that we deserve to be loved and happy. I hope everyone will be happy after watching this series.
How conscious are you about current climate and environmental issues? The current situation could easily change Black Knightas you mentioned.
Kim Woo Bin: Yes, I think this could actually happen.and we went through a pandemic [recently], so I watch documentaries like everyone else and try to be aware of the environmental issues that are happening around us. I’m trying to do what I can. We try to use less plastic. I used a plastic cup today, but I am trying to use less plastic and I am mindful of the fact that we are all in this together. I think that I have to do my best from now on. [Laughs] I’m shy because I’m holding this plastic cup in my hand.
What makes 5-8 different from other characters you’ve played?
Kim Woo Bin: I think the characters I’ve played so far have one thing in common: the face. I think that this character has a completely different basis for thinking, acting, and speaking. I think his energy is also very different.I tried to approach him in a completely different way.I think people who watch the series think that 5-8 is completely different from any character I’ve ever played. I hope you feel like a character..that’s my hope.
