The editor of a German magazine that published an ‘interview’ with former F1 champion Michael Schumacher has been fired for including a quote generated by artificial intelligence.
The publisher of Die Aktuelle, a weekly magazine owned by Funke Media Group, also apologized to Schumacher’s family, saying they were planning legal action this week.
Bianca Pohlmann, Managing Director of Funke, announced: It in no way meets the standards of journalism that we and our readers have come to expect from a publisher like Funke.
“As a result of the publication of this article, there are immediate personnel consequences. Die Aktuelle Editor-in-Chief Anne Hoffmann, who has been responsible for the journalism of the paper since 2009, will be relieved of her duties effective today.”
The magazine adorned Schumacher’s cover with the headline “Michael Schumacher, First Interview”. The catchphrase adds: Only inside the pages of the magazine appeared quotes attributed to the former racing champion, generated by artificial intelligence.
Schumacher suffered a brain injury while skiing in December 2013. Since then, he has not been seen in public and his family has taken steps to protect his privacy.
