Yosemite National Park will be closed from Friday until at least May 3 as the snow melt is expected to cause flooding in the area. the park said Tuesday.
The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures to rise by 5 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit this weekend, and melting snow will raise water levels in the Merced River.
This winter, the Sierra Nevada region, which includes Yosemite Valley, Lake Tahoe, and Mount Whitney, saw more than 300% more snow than normal.
Closing will begin at 10pm on Friday. More flooding is likely in May and June, according to the park.
Visitors who booked accommodations and campsites during the cancellation will receive refunds and wilderness permits can be rescheduled, the park said.
Wawona, Crane Flat Area and Hetch Hetch will remain open during the closure. Mariposa Grove is open for hiking only. West Yosemite Valley will be open, but services will not be available, parking will be limited, and visitors will not be allowed to park off-road.
“In Yosemite Valley, the closure will be at the El Capitan Crossroads (the road that crosses the Merced River just east of El Capitan),” the park said.
The east side of the road is off limits for visitors.
