Pianist Atwell’s hit Let’s Have Another Party is on the playlist, celebrating Windrush’s 75th arrival in the UK this year.
Pianist Winifred Atwell (the first black woman to hit UK No. 1) leads the music legends in Spotify’s new Windrush Top 20 playlist.
Atwell’s 1954 hit Let’s Have Another Party hits the playlist, and this year marks the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush’s first arrival in the UK.
Edited by the Windrush 75 Network, which brings together organizations to celebrate its June 22nd anniversary, Atwell, along with Stormzy, Beverley Knight, Craig David, and Boney M, celebrate the Windrush generation, their descendants, and others around the world. Introduce the significant contributions made by Commonwealth.
The chronological list includes tracks from 1948 to 2021, and when we got off the wind rush at Tilbury Dock in 1948, we played the specially written song “London Is the It starts with Lord Kitchener who played “Place for Me” live.
This playlist was directed by Mykaell Riley, Director of the Black Music Research Unit at the University of Westminster and PI of Base Culture Research.
Riley was a founding member of 1970s British reggae band Steel Pulse and the first non-Jamaican artist to win the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
“This is a great list that scratches the surface of a very important cultural contribution. In many ways, it’s a teaser for what lies beyond the beats, melodies and songs that have been taken into so many lives.”
