Almost exactly a year ago, Will Butler announced he was leaving Arcade Fire. In his statement he said: Time for new things. ” The timing was pretty lucky. Months after Will left, his brother Win Butler was accused of sexual misconduct. Either way, Will Butler isn’t his brother and he still releases his own music.
After leaving Arcade Fire, Will Butler released two tracks, “A Stranger’s House” and “Nearer To Thee”. Will just announced a European tour later this year and is also sharing another new track. Will’s back members of his band Sister Squares, Sarah Dobbs, Julie Shore, Jenny Shore and Miles Francis, have toured and recorded with him for nearly a decade. According to a press release, they are “a New York-based band rooted in dance and theater” and are now billed alongside Will himself.
New song “Willows” is a throbbing, meditative rocker with swirling backup vocals and a driving synthpop beat. Regarding this, Will Butler said:
“Willows” is about leaving the past in the past. Nostalgia is sweet, but it’s poison. The scene in the song is about someone going out into the wilderness to meet a folk-tale old woman of fate. And maybe he wants to be young again, or things to be the way they used to be.
