“The Age of Pleasure” is Monáe’s attempt to “draw what brings joy… out of such an honest space” and write “something dedicated to this pan-African crowd of friends. she told interviewer Zane Lowe.
To create the track, Monáe had friends listen to the song at events such as the Met Gale afterparty to determine if the song was album worthy.
