Spotify is one of the largest music streaming services on the planet and one that feels compatible with any platform. The Connect feature is one of the reasons why it is so prevalent on devices.
Spotify Connect first came online in 2013, making it easy to stream music to different devices. It’s not that different from Chromecast or AirPlay 2, but it works with a wider range of devices.
If you’re unfamiliar with Spotify Connect, we’ll take a closer look at what it is and the devices that support it.
What is Spotify Connect?
Spotify Connect allows users to stream (and control) music from the Spotify app to their hardware/device. This is done via mobile or desktop and her web player.
Devices used to stream music must be on the same Wi-Fi connection. If you’re using a mobile device, it acts as a remote so you can control playback, volume, and add other devices to stream to.
Instead of streaming music from your phone to the speaker, music is streamed directly from the Spotify service to the speaker itself, so your phone doesn’t draw power like it would when using Bluetooth.
Simply open the app on your mobile, desktop, or web player, click the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen, and select the device(s) you want to stream to. This means you can stream to multiple devices in different rooms, enabling multi-room setups.
Which devices support Spotify Connect?
Initially restricted to Spotify’s Premium tier, it was announced in 2018 that Spotify’s Free tier users would be able to access the Connect feature, which is tricky.
Free Tier users will have limited access to Connect features as some devices will still require a Premium subscription. Spotify says it supports over 2000 of his devices from 200 brands. Smart TVs, soundbars (such as the Samsung HW-S61B pictured below), wireless speakers, game consoles, and music streamers are just a few of the devices you can stream from. Spotify Connect will be supported on the HiFi tier, but no word yet on when the lossless audio tier will arrive.
Audio quality depends on your subscribed tier. If you’re listening on the Free level, you’ll be streaming at 160kbps on mobile/desktop and 128kbps from the web player. In the premium tier, the cap is 320kbps or 256kbps when streaming from a web player.
