The head coach of the West Virginia University men’s basketball team used homosexual slurs twice in radio interviews.
Coach Bob Huggins apologized Monday and said the university was looking into the matter.
According to ESPN, the smear came during a discussion about his former job at the University of Cincinnati.
In an interview, Huggins said, “A school where you can throw a rubber dick on the floor and say you’re not doing it can get away with it no matter what.”
The radio host said, “I think it was ‘Transgender Night,’ right?”
Huggins then said, “I think it was all the idiots, the Catholic idiots.”
In a statement released by the university, Huggins said: During the conversation I used utterly insensitive and abusive language. I have no excuse. No excuses here. To the people I have offended, the Xavier University community, the University of Cincinnati, and the West, he apologizes profusely to the University of Virginia. As we’ve shared with our players in 40 years of coaching, our words and actions have consequences. I am ashamed and ashamed and heartbroken for those I have hurt. I have to do better and I will.
West Virginia’s track and field team said, “Coach Huggins’ remarks on today’s Cincinnati radio show were insensitive, offensive and do not represent the university’s values.
