Days for the long-awaited 4th album. rat so god, The End, Asheville, North Carolina-based rockers Wednesday are back with another single, “TV in the Gas Pump.” After ‘Bull Believer’, ‘Chosen One’ and ‘Bath County’ rocked everyone’s world, Wednesday is switching gears with a softer production. “TV in the Gas Pump” is an acoustic translation of “the amazing beauty of the American South,” as video director Louis Derm puts it. This is the perfect final stage before the full April 7 release of his album from Dead Oceans.
Frontwoman Carly Hartzman has always had a unique way of poeticizing the beauty that really lives in the rough and grungy part of her environment, and is best known for “TV in the Gas Pump.” is a perfect example of that.Through surreal resting-place pilgrimage images and American iconography, Hartzman paints a portrait of her surroundings. They are all applicable to highway streaks located between Central America and the Deep South. “People standing with their arms crossed/In the Panera Bread line/At the rest stop/Come hard/At the Dollar General/You went too far/Jake walked into a Starbucks/Gas station TV/Brales in the middle darkness in,” she sings.
“This was the first song I wrote about the tour, and I just wanted to collect all the images that I ingested on the tour,” says Hertzman. “Some of the images used in the song include: never-ending petrol stations mixed with dystopian petrol station ads, the stressful experience of Panera Bread, Stories that rose from ingesting what they thought were microdoses, etc. Dollar General’s Shroom.
To accompany the single, the band have also announced a series of US and EU tour dates, beginning in Athens, Ohio at the end of March. On April 8th, they will host his free record release event for 18+ at TV Eyes in Ridgewood, NY.
