Wear OS 4 was big news yesterday, but until then we can expect some updates, especially related to tiles.
Version 1.2 of the Jetpack Tiles library allows developers to add animations to their tiles. Especially the following he has two types.
- Tweened animations, like goal/status rings often used in fitness apps, “create smooth transitions as you change parts of the layout.”
- A transition animation “animates new or disappearing elements from a tile”, like when a weather forecast updates.
Additionally, this new library will allow tiles that use platform data sources such as heart rate, steps, and time to update once per second.
An interesting related piece of information for this talk is how tiles “refresh when they are visible or one swipe away from the visible screen.” This can be useful for end-user placement of tiles.
This is controlled by the Wear OS system to prevent excessive updates that can negatively impact battery performance.
Meanwhile, Gmail and Google Calendar for Wear OS launching later this year, plus a new tile for Spotify that lets you view and start recent podcast episodes, frequently-played albums, and access Spotify DJs. You can expect it. The WhatsApp beta app also offers two tiles, and Peloton offers another for “tracking your training streak.”
This is in response to the “5x increase in Wear OS active devices” since the launch of Wear OS 3.
