The Associated Press earlier reported that Rollins was resigning. A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately comment, and a spokeswoman for the Department’s inspector general did not respond to a request for comment.
Rollins came under scrutiny after attending a Democratic National Committee fundraiser featuring First Lady Jill Biden at her Massachusetts home last July.she At the time, he defended himself by tweeting She said she “left early with permission to meet Dr. Biden” to speak at two regional events.
The Associated Press reported in November that the Office of the Inspector General had opened an investigation into Ms. Rollins’ attendance at a fundraiser, but the investigation expanded to other areas, including business use of her personal phone.
Rollins was sworn in as the first black woman to serve as a federal attorney in Massachusetts in January 2022. She previously served as District Attorney for three districts in Boston and surrounding areas.
Rollins’ progressive approach to law enforcement caught the attention of Sens. Elizabeth Warren (Democrat of Massachusetts) and Ed Markey (Democrat of Massachusetts), recommended her for the state’s top federal prosecutor. But Republicans tried to block Rollins from appearing in court over the 15 low-level crimes list she declined to prosecute. Vice President Kamala Harris had to cast a tie vote twice to advance her nomination.
Josh Gerstein and Associated Press contributed to this report.
