News of the deal is a welcome headline for both Trudeau and Biden. Just as the southern U.S. border issue remains a sticky political issue for Biden, so too has the influx of immigrants put pressure on Canada.
White House Press Secretary Carine Jean-Pierre said Thursday at Air Force One, “We are seeing an increase in illegal immigration north into Canada. It reflects,” he said. The agreement is a revised version of the Safe Third Country Agreement signed by the United States and Canada in 2004, requiring asylum seekers to apply in the country of first arrival. Friday’s announcement is in line with the Biden administration’s recent strategy to deter immigration across the southern border. Border crossings have dwindled since Mr. Biden announced plans to take in his 30,000 immigrants a month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela this year.
