Former President Donald Trump’s attorneys will meet with Justice Department officials on Monday following a public request for a meeting about alleged prosecutorial misconduct, sources familiar with the matter said.
The meeting comes as the special counsel’s investigation into possible interference with and handling of classified documents by President Trump is believed to be nearing its final stages.
Trump’s team had publicly requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland, but he is not expected to attend.
CBS News first reported the meeting, tweeting an image of one of the attorneys entering Justice Department headquarters.
A grand jury is scheduled to hear testimony from another witness in the classified documents investigation in federal court in Washington, D.C. this week, according to a source familiar with the matter.
This is the first known indication of a grand jury’s activity, which primarily tries classified documents cases. A CNN reporter last attended a grand jury meeting on May 5.
In requesting a visit last month, Trump attorneys John Lowery and James Trusty said in a letter to Garland posted on Trump’s social media platforms, “There is no such evidence in the history of our country.” “No U.S. president has ever been investigated without an investigation.” Outrageous and illegal fashion. ”
The Justice Department documents and obstruction investigation against the former president is being handled by special counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by Mr. Garland last year to operate independently.
If a decision to prosecute is imminent, the defense attorney may meet with the prosecutor. But people familiar with the investigation previously told CNN that Smith had not told Trump’s lawyers that he was nearing such a decision.
It remains to be seen whether Smith has met with former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, a potential key witness, and when Smith will release his findings in his final report to Garland. Or it is unclear whether the charges will be decided.
