(CNN) Donald Trump’s lead defense attorney is expected to testify before a federal grand jury on Friday and answer documentary questions about the former president’s failed resistance.
Attorneys’ appearances before a grand jury this week could lead to a successful special counsel investigation into the handling of classified records and possible obstruction of justice in Mar-a-Lago when the federal government tried to retrieve the documents, or It may interrupt.
Attorney Evan Corcoran was told by a federal court that he could no longer withhold information about his communications with his client Trump leading up to the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago last summer. He was also ordered earlier this week to turn in a memo he believed was work he wrote as an attorney in the investigation. and the many moments his team is responding to.
Prosecutors have revealed in court proceedings that are still sealed that they believe Trump tried to use Corcoran to advance the crime.
A Trump spokesperson criticized the recent developments, saying, “Prosecutors only attack lawyers when there is no evidence.”
When Corcoran first testified before a grand jury in January, he was asked about what happened leading up to Trump’s Mar-Arago raid in August. However, he refused to answer, so prosecutors took the unusual step of fighting him in court, forcing him to answer.
Prosecutors now want to ask Corcoran about his interactions with Trump regarding the May subpoena and the subsequent search for classified documents in Mar-a-Lago. They also cited a statement Corcoran made in June 2022 (claiming that a “meticulous search” had taken place for the box being moved from the White House to Florida) and a statement made the same day with Trump. I’m curious about June’s call during Corcoran. The Trump Organization was subpoenaed for surveillance footage of Mar-a-Lago, according to people familiar with the matter. Surveillance footage eventually showed the boxes being moved from a storage room inside the resort, which witnesses later said happened at Trump’s direction.
That June statement, which said all classified documents had been returned, included the signature of attorney Christina Bob, who added the warning “to my knowledge.”
Later that summer, the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago and found hundreds of government records, including classified material, casting doubt on the attorney’s testimony.
Corcoran’s second visit to a grand jury on Friday falls nicely into a year-long criminal investigation into classified records held by Trump.
A few months ago, other Trump aides were brought in to testify, and more than 20 aides and staff around Mar-a-Lago were subpoenaed to a grand jury, CNN reported.
Even Thursday, the grand jury investigating the Mar-a-Lago documents was proceeding with hearings from unknown witnesses. They have also requested testimony from others, and in many cases today they do not wish to extend the deadline.
