CHICAGO — A severe storm, including a possible tornado, is expected to hit Chicago on Friday.
The city and surrounding areas face a severe weather threat from 2:00 to 11:00 pm on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, “This is a relatively rare and serious weather threat for our region.”
Two severe weather events are expected. The first from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM and another from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, thunderstorms can bring winds of over 75 miles per hour, knock down trees and damage structures, and generate tornadoes that can cause extensive damage.
The first round of the storm could also see damaging hail that could leave dents in cars and siding. .
According to the National Weather Service, people should make sure they have a way to receive weather alerts and stay up to date on the weather. The agency also advised people to secure objects outside and use caution when driving tall vehicles due to the wind.
Strong winds, not thunderstorms, are expected through Saturday morning, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, which could bring gusts of up to 45 mph.
