TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday morning as his company battles to avoid a potential ban in the United States.
Chew makes the safety of his users, especially teens, a strong priority, and plans to tell Congress that TikTok will firewall user data in the United States from “unauthorized foreign access.” Chew also said the company is “not manipulated by any government,” and plans to ensure transparency and allow independent oversight to assess compliance.
TikTok promotes a complex scheme known as Project Texas to ease U.S. concerns about its ownership. The plan is to keep our data operations in the US home, and allow external parties to review and submit code to app stores.
TikTok is owned by Chinese internet giant ByteDance, and there are concerns among U.S. policymakers that the Chinese government could force TikTok to hand over large amounts of personal data collected as part of its business model. It has existed for many years.
The White House last week reportedly asked ByteDance to sell TikTok after two years of negotiations with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). “If this news is true, China will firmly oppose it,” a spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.
