The Weeknd, who recently became the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify, is statistically the most popular musician in the world, Guinness World Records announced Monday.
The 33-year-old singer has set two world records for music streaming, reaching 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify, according to Guinness World Records.
Spotify itself also hit a milestone last month. Tweet“Official: On February 27th, The Weeknd became the first artist in Spotify’s history to reach 100 million monthly listeners.”
The recent surge in streams came after a remix of “Die For You” featuring Ariana Grande went viral on TikTok.
Originally released in 2016, the remix track also hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list in early March. It was the seventh number one hit for both Grande and The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye. According to Billboard, it was the second time The Weeknd and Grande teamed up for a No. 1 remix after their 2021 “Save Your Tears” remix also topped the charts.
The Weeknd’s 2020 track “Blinding Lights” is Spotify’s most-streamed track of all time, with more than 3.47 billion plays as of Monday, according to the music streaming platform. His song “Starboy” is also one of his most listened songs on Spotify.
The Weeknd isn’t the first to win a Guinness World Records award. He was awarded his two certificates in 2016. One was his most-played album on Spotify in 2015, the other his one for the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 by a solo male artist.
