Amazon is one of the most popular companies people want to work for. But getting a job at an online retailer requires passing a notoriously rigorous interview process.
Although you may come across some classic interview questions like “Tell me about yourself” and “Why do you want to work here?” Amazon recruiters often present trickier prompts to better assess your work style and problem-solving skills.
According to Jay Shankar, Vice President of Global Talent Acquisition at Amazon Web Services, job seekers always stumble on one question.
“What’s the most innovative thing you’ve ever done?”
Shankar asks this question to gauge how well a candidate fits into one of Amazon’s key leadership principles, “Invent and Simplify.”
According to Amazon’s website, “Leaders expect and need innovation and invention from their teams, and they always find ways to simplify. They are aware of the outside world, look for new ideas from everywhere, and It’s not invented here.’ We do new things, so we accept that it can be misunderstood for a long time.”
If you’re interested in working at Amazon, Shankar says it’s “very important” to study the company’s leadership principles. Because hiring managers use them to evaluate candidates throughout the interview process.
“We really want the experience our candidates bring to the table to really align with leadership principles like ownership, thrift and curiosity because they are the true foundation of who we are as a company. An Amazon manager previously told CNBC Make It.
You don’t have to “invent” things to prove you’re innovative, Shankar clarifies. Making processes more efficient, leading projects outside of their usual responsibilities, coming up with creative solutions to problems, or taking new approaches to familiar tasks are all strong examples of innovation. is.
When Shankar asks a candidate to talk about this principle, she looks for examples that show that the candidate is curious and creative in thinking about solutions. Your answer to this question should be clear and concise, describing the problem you solved and the positive impact it had on your business and customers.
“Amazon is always looking for builders who have interesting ideas and want to improve things,” says Shankar. “You need to be able to talk not only about your most recent roles and specific responsibilities, but also how you continue to challenge yourself and keep yourself interested in your work.”
