A 12-year-old and a 20-year-old have been charged with murder after a restaurant worker was shot during an argument with a customer in Keene on Saturday night.
Flowers and a cross now stand outside the Sonic Drive-In on Old Betsy Road in Keene. It grows as a memorial to Matthew Davis, a 32-year-old employee and his father who was shot dead on duty Saturday night.
The shooting occurred around 9:40 p.m. Saturday, Keene Police said in a statement. Keen Police Chief James Kidd said Davis confronted a customer identified as 20-year-old Angel Gomez for urinating in a parking lot.
The crash escalated into a physical one, Kidd said, when a 12-year-old boy who was in Gomez’s car pulled out an assault rifle and fired six shots at Davis.
Davis suffered multiple bruises and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, but survived.
Gomez and the boy initially escaped, but were arrested later that night. Gomez returned to the restaurant and the 12-year-old boy was arrested in Rio Vista, police said.
The 12-year-old boy’s name has not been released because he is a juvenile. Both he and Gomez have been charged with murder.
The restaurant remained closed on Monday as neighbors stopped by to pick up flowers. Resident Jane Baggett said she felt she had to do something.
“I wish we could have done more, but now if they could see that support and love, and maybe even if we didn’t know him, [know] His life was important to many of us,” Baggett said.
A GoFundMe was launched to help Davis’ family cover funeral costs and support his 10-year-old son.
A Sonic spokesperson released the following statement:
“We are sorry to learn of the tragedy involving a franchise team member in Keene, Texas. The franchisee is cooperating fully with local authorities in conducting an investigation.”
Keene is located approximately 30 miles south of Fort Worth in Johnson County.
