Rep. Jeremy Faison (R), chairman of the Tennessee House GOP Caucus, gave a grim interview to CNN about the Republican-led state legislature’s historic ousting of two Democrats who participated in gun control protests. After that, I hurried home. (See below.)
After the state legislature ousted two Democrats — Rep. Justin Pearson and Rep. Justin Jones, both black, and allowed white Rep. Glorida Johnson to keep his seat, Faison told the network Thursday. Appeared. All three joined a protest in the House of Representatives last month following the Covenant school shooting in Nashville that killed six of his people, including his three children.
CNN’s Van Jones lashed out at Faison for the Democratic ouster.
“Why didn’t you go to the ethics committee? Why didn’t you go through due process?” Jones asked.
“You hope they don’t go to extremes, but you do. Why?”
Faison accused Jones of accusing the House of Representatives, arguing that Jones followed the rules before demanding more answers.
“Have you been to the Ethics Committee?” Jones asked.
“Actually, I think 71, or 70 members saw what happened today and voted to expel one of them,” Faison continued.
“Why didn’t you go to the ethics committee and do what is always done in that organization…if you want respect and you want people to reason, why are you so unreasonable?” What are you doing?” Jones continued.
Faison said the House does not want to go down the ethics road.
Faison said three Democrats “moved” crowds of protesters earlier in the day, a claim CNN correspondent Sarah Sydner refuted.
“They love their state, they love their kids, they want to see a safer place for their kids and themselves, so they’re already pretty excited,” Sydner said.
Faison then mentioned the three-and-a-half-hour commute before abruptly cutting the interview short.
“Thank you for letting me talk to you, God bless you,” he said, shuffling the cameras.
