(CNN) Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul said the stabbing attack on one of his staff members in Washington, D.C. over the weekend was “life-threatening, but he will recover.”
The employee told police he was attacked after leaving a Mexican restaurant on the 1300 block of H Street NE with a friend shortly after 5 p.m. on March 25, according to court records.
Paul released a statement regarding the stabbing on Monday, and Paul described his staff as “a strong, athletic young man” in an interview on Tuesday.
“He’s going to get better. He’s been through a lot,” Paul said during an appearance on Fox News’ “Hanity.” “He has not completely overcome all the problems from this attack. It was life threatening, but he will recover. He is fine. I spoke with him. It will take time.” But we are all doing our best and wishing him well as soon as possible.”
According to court documents, Staff had a punctured left lung, a laceration to his left ear, and “a puncture wound to the left side of his head that penetrated his skull and likely caused an intracerebral hemorrhage.”
A friend told police the attackers “jumped at them from behind a wall” and jumped on top of staff, court records say.
According to police reports, witnesses said the attacker began stabbing the staff member multiple times with a knife.
Officials told police they did not know the alleged attackers and did not know why they were attacked, according to court records.
