After being asked to compose a ballet score for choreographer Justin Peck reflection, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens prepares to release a studio recording of the song. Accompanied by pianists Timo Andrés and Conor Hannick, it will be released May 19 on Stevens’s longtime label, Asmatic Kitty Records.
To showcase the project, Stevens, Andres, and Hanick released “Ekstasis,” a percussive instrumentation with a delightful piano progression. It’s a meticulous, dreamy, whimsical song that serves as a fitting introduction to one of Stevens’ most ambitious projects to date. Focusing on energy, light and duality, he says, “When I write for ballet, I’m always thinking about bodies moving through space. That’s first and foremost what inspired this music.” is”
