Screen time alerts on my iPhone hate this.
Last week, Spotify announced a big update that is slowly rolling out to users around the world. With the new update, the Spotify mobile app transforms into a more TikTok-like experience, with a screen-filling vertical feed of creator-made videos.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise if you’ve been paying attention to the tech ecosystem over the past few years. TikTok is big and everyone wants to be part of the action. And for Spotify, having more people staring at the app for longer periods of time is arguably a good thing in this engagement-obsessed world. .
Spotify’s big update (which thankfully hasn’t arrived on my phone yet) doesn’t just add inconvenience. It completely misunderstands what Spotify is supposed to be for. It’s listening.
pivot to video
Every time your phone receives a big Spotify patch, you’ll see a new world of video podcasts and short snippets of things you might want to engage with later. The first and most important issue here is that Spotify last The place you want to go when you want to watch a video.
I’ve been using Spotify regularly for over ten years. This is one of my most used apps. won’t Contribute to that dreaded screen time alert. Unlike many apps that want you to see as much of the app as possible, Spotify allowed you to enjoy it passively. I could take my eyes off my phone for hours while playing playlists and podcasts and getting something from my phone.
Sure, you’ll have to open an app every now and then to pump more screen time into your eyeballs, but it’s a radically different experience than pretty much everything else you can do with a smartphone. We want to be like all our apps.
A quick glance at social media shows that I’m not alone in feeling this way.

The point here is that I am not alone. For over a decade, Spotify has listeningThrow something, sit back, and indulge in your favorite jams or the true crime podcast you can’t get away from. You can even use it while you sleep!
resistant to change
Of course, even with an update, you can technically do all of that. It’s important not to get too carried away while hating new and weird things.the new Spotify won’t I was so scared that I had to explain it.
That said, I don’t want to spend precious time on this planet avoiding digital mines just to get to my songs and podcasts. This stream of video content could, in theory, interrupt what I’m listening to and drain my precious phone’s battery even more. And, as I already explained, I don’t go to Spotify to see things.
I understand the temptation to imitate TikTok. I really do, even if I’m a grumpy old man who doesn’t want to use that particular app. In an age where we can all agree it’s not good, it’s both annoying and worrying that Spotify is heading in this direction. , the conversion to video seems to be prioritized.
where does this end? Five years from now, will Spotify be primarily a music listening app?
